I am looking for input on what everyone carries on-board for tools and spares. The obvious ones are: Spare tire jack cordless impact gun screwdriver straight slot screwdriver Phillips Vis grips (a couple of different sizes) 100 MPH tape Zip ties Test leads (Thanks John Cassidy!) Spair accordian hose for the turbo (Audi 4000 Quattro Turbo) What else? shovel come along spare lug nuts, easy to lose in the dark in the dirt. flashlight. Your triangles; Couple quarts of oils; Pint of brake fluid Select sockets and a 3/8 ratchet. I've never carried any oil. If I need 1 quart I would probably need many many more. Same with brake fluid. If you don't have enough when you start the stage, the problem you have probably won't be solved with some spare oil. IMHO. -Spare fuses a couple of each value -Spare batteries for ?, ie., 9V intercom, AA flashlight, etc. CP Desert Storm Rally A2 Jetta #305 You might consider to carry the donut spare. The donut is better than a flat if you have two flats. Regular wheel wrench. You never know when the impact's battery will go away. Sounds silly, but if you use glasses, a spare pair should be on order. I have TWO flashlights (one for the driver to examine the engine/car/etc..., and one so I don't kill myself setting/retrieving the triangle). I also have: a small multimeter side cutters ear plugs (for when you rip off the exhaust) crimping tool a selection of crimp connectors electrical tape I have had to use all of the above at one time or another. Admittledly North Americans are the fattest and laziest people in the known world and most people are in deplorable physical condition, BUT What makes the heavy, possibly unreliable and for sure expensive Cordless Impact gun a _Necessity_? A bit of anti sieze on the threads occasionally and the correct size lug wrench and you are miles ahead in cost, weight and certainty of function. That's _certainty_ of knowledge, not belief that "it should work" >screwdriver straight slot >screwdriver Phillips >Vis grips (a couple of different sizes) >100 MPH tape >Zip ties >Test leads (Thanks John Cassidy!) >Spair accordian hose for the turbo (Audi 4000 Quattro Turbo) > >What else? > > Spare bulbs for headlights, spare bulb for map light taped to roll bar 5/8" tube 2" long union for mending hose and matching hose clamps 1 extra gearbox oil fill plug. A cople if extra exhaust hanger thingies MiG wire. 2 spare used known good spark plugs (all those starts and stops, I've wet plugs (when you have the correct heat range for really stomping on the gas you'll be maybe 2 steps colder than original, so when the engine cools down when waiting to enter stages, it can wet the plugs) If you're rallying in the Masai tribal areas of Kenya: Gold English Sovereigns The other thing to have is a clean terry cloth shop towel and window cleaner. It is so nice to always have a sparkling clean window prior to a stage, expecially those late afternoon stages into the setting sun. One corner's worth of extra lugnuts (or lugs for those unconverted VWs) JB Spare wire, fuses, electrical tape. Electrical connectors and a crimping tool. Small pliers A selection of screwdrivers Knife Vise grips Zip ties - multiple lengths Side cutters A ratchet and the sockets required for the car (including one that is drain-plug sized). We've used all of these at one time or another to fix the rally car, including replacing the drain plug, bypassing circuits, fixing odo or intercom electrical connections, re-wiring an intercom plug, re-attaching an oil pressure sender (mid stage)... Adrian One thing that was VERY helpful, a collapsible 5 gallon water bottle. I had to refill a leaking radiator from roadside ponds to finish an event. We purchased at Wally World. Also, Velcro (self adhesive, industrial grade), small ratchet tie downs (used to secure a broken skidplate mount). K Rally Focus Rent the movie "Dr Strangelove, or How I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb" and watch it and pay close attention when the B-52 crew realised they won't make it back and the pilot played the the incomprable Slim Pickens starts going thru the survival kit reading off each item. Ever'thing you need to git thru a nuculer war, yeeee haaaaaw!! Add a couple of bulbs including for the map light and fuses, a relay an extra exhaust hanger, if you don't have a second ignition aplifier mounted up ready to go then add one to the box, a couple of good used sparkie plugs ain't a bad idea, you should be using a couple of steps colder plugs on rthe stages and there is a tendancy to wet the plugs sometimes with all the starts and stops.
