The Dearborn Engine plant makes the SPI for the US Focus upstairs from the new 2.3 inline production area.   The new inline production area takes up 350,000 sq/ft less than half the space needed for SPI production upstairs, and is capable of producing 2.0 versions in addition to the 2.3 versions.  The SPI engine dates back to the 1985 escort 1.9l CVH engine and is currently only used in the Escort and Focus is due to end production in 2003 according to union agreement.  May be sooner if a new engine is assigned to the plant or demand doesn't warrant further production.   New engine production capacity is 350,000 a year and is conveniently located close to Ford's Wayne assembly plant where the Focus is built.

2.3 inline production began in February 2001.

Chihuahua Engine Plant makes the Zetec E for the US Focus and is the sole source of 1.8 and 2.0 Duratec HEs for the Mondeo until Valencia starts in 2002.
